Reading Buddies

Reading Buddies is a fun weekly reading support program that gives children one-to-one reading practice with a caring volunteer who loves to read. Buddies read together for fun and participate in activities that promote confidence, interest and the joy of reading!

Little Buddies are in Grades 1 to 3, including French Immersion students.

Reliable and dedicated VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED.  Volunteers can be students in Grade 6 and up or adults.

The Reading Buddies program runs three times per year for 8 week sessions.  The sessions run in October/November, January/February and April/May.  Registration is in September, December and March.  Little Buddies & Big Buddies both need to register at least 1 week prior to start up of session.  Registration forms are at the Children’s Desk.

How much does the program cost?

$15 per child (8 sessions, once a week). Each child/volunteer involved in the program will receive a FREE library card, if they don’t have a card already.  If they have an existing card with fines, up to $15.00 will be forgiven.

Who are the Big Buddies?

They are volunteers from our community who love to read and enjoy working with children. Big Buddies receive training before and during the program. Student volunteers can earn community service hours for school.

What do the Reading Buddies do?

For the first half hour, Buddies will spend some quality time reading books and chatting about what they have read together. Following a quick snack, Reading Buddies will then participate in a fun literacy activity together.

How do I register?

Pick up an application form at the Children’s circulation desk or download the form online.
